The discussion surrounding the role of remote working has shifted considerably over the years. With 25% of the workforce now working remotely with some frequency, it has become an employee expectation as well as a way to attract and retain top talent. Still, we are seeing some companies start to call remote workers back to the office in order to embrace the agile work movement. The agile approach is one that started in the tech industry, but has more recently been sweeping across various sectors and business functions. Agile working and management is designed to com- bat unpredictability by using transparent teams that are ready to change momentum and direction together. It requires everyone to be on the same page and focus on continuous improvement, flexibility, and team input, but does it require everyone to be in the same location? The question regarding remote work is, does the agile movement translate into a return to the corporate office? There are certainly connec- tive digital tools available that make collaboration possible. For example, adoption of the latest technologies from Slack, Yammer, Google Hangouts, and Hipchat to a range of new artificial intelligence conversational experiences have contributed to the ability of companies to improve remote work collaboration and drive results. But while these technologies are helpful, will more companies find the fastest and cheapest form of communication to be the office, and what is the impact of this on attracting and retaining employees?
For some, remote work has become an “expectation and 21st century way of working,” rather than just an employee “perk.” For employers, remote work can be a strategic effort to access a global talent pool, boost productivity, cut real estate costs, and im- prove employee satisfaction. According to The Human Face of Remote Working, con- ducted by Polycom in collaboration with Future Workplace, two-thirds of today’s global workforce takes advantage of the anywhere working model, a significant shift since May of 2012 when that number was only 14%. However, there are certainly challenges and shortcomings that come with this shift. Going forward, this eBook will explore statistics on remote work, its benefits and barriers, perceptions, demo- graphics and more. It will also provide strategic insights to consider for the future.
